Description
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds-phonemes–in spoken words. Before children learn to read print, they need to become aware of how the sounds in words work.

The Supporting Phonemic Awareness with State Standards course provides educators with an understanding of phonological awareness (focusing on phonemic awareness) and appropriate approaches for promoting skill development in their instructional settings. Children enter preschool and kindergarten with immense differences in stages of development, and educators must meet this challenge by providing assessments and activities that support children’s phonological awareness (focusing on phonemic awareness).

Goals and Objectives

This course will enable participants to:

Demonstrate an understanding of phonological awareness (focusing on phonemic awareness) principles and how these connect to literacy development;
Identify the phonological awareness (focusing on phonemic awareness) linguistic components of phoneme, onset-rhyme and syllables;

Demonstrate the ability to administer assessments for phonemic awareness skills and analyze these assessments;
