CLOI’s Journey

In 1986, the Stratford Foundation Inc. was formed with the goal of becoming a valuable educational resource for the community. After establishing the Commonwealth Learning Center in 1988 and the Professional Training Institute in 1992, Stratford came into the 21st century in 2010 when CLOI, the Commonwealth Learning Online Institute, was formed.

Since our early days we have increased our offerings and university partners to meet the needs of educators nationwide. Today our program includes both self-paced and facilitated courses, and our credit offering institutions have expanded to include Gordon College, Westfield State University, and MidAmerica Nazarene University.

After nearly a decade, our commitment to being a valuable professional development resource for the community is stronger than ever, and we work towards this everyday by providing exceptional learning for educators across the country.

Our courses are readily accessible on the internet via a laptop, tablet, desktop PC, or other mobile device. They’re suitable for North Carolina school curriculum directors, principals, superintendents and administrators and can be studied individually or in groups depending on the requirements of the district or school. More Information On CLOI Courses for North Carolina Teachers

Presently we offer you online courses in both facilitated and self-taught formats. Online courses for writing and special education are being designed. The training helps tutors of all levels from foundational level up to 12th grade. The approaches for learning presented in each of the online courses should successfully ready your students for college and life.

Your Choice: Self-Paced Vs. Facilitated Online Courses

CLOI offers two options for online courses depending upon how much instruction and structure you are seeking. Our self-paced online courses provide more convenience as you progress through them whenever you have the time. You’re not required to finish any lesson by a particular date before progressing to the next. However, a facilitator is always on hand to email with your queries or concerns. Self-paced courses are moreover shorter, commonly needing somewhere between 8 and 15 hrs to finish. The facilitated internet courses convey more in-depth training and should take approximately 7 weeks to do. Contrary to the self-paced option, you’re expected to finish a lesson by a specified date before carrying on. A seasoned, instructor leads the class through the course and establishes targets which participants must achieve before continuing with the course. Our training courses take roughly 50 to 70 hours to complete. The facilitated format courses occur five times each year between Jan and Sept.

Online Course Topics in Reading

Some of the current online reading courses include Instructing Spelling and Phonetics, Vocabulary Building, Integrating Five Core Reading Skills and Close Reading. They’ll show you how to help students understand the link between the sound of the words when spoken with actual words on a page, broaden their vocabulary, increase fluency, and more. Our training courses were designed by education administrators especially for teachers in the classroom. They include many examples that you can incorporate into your classes.

Earn Continuing Education Credits For Your Professional Development

Each individual facilitated course can earn you three graduate credits or 36 PDPs which you can use towards your professional development. The self-paced courses earn a half or one credit. New courses that are worth two grad credits are presently in development. Graduate credit is offered by Gordon College, Westfield State University and MidAmerica Nazarene University; you receive credits from the college of your choosing. PDPs can be obtained from Westfield State University.
