CLOI’s Journey

In 1986, the Stratford Foundation Inc. was formed with the goal of becoming a valuable educational resource for the community. After establishing the Commonwealth Learning Center in 1988 and the Professional Training Institute in 1992, Stratford came into the 21st century in 2010 when CLOI, the Commonwealth Learning Online Institute, was formed.

Since our early days we have increased our offerings and university partners to meet the needs of educators nationwide. Today our program includes both self-paced and facilitated courses, and our credit offering institutions have expanded to include Gordon College, Westfield State University, and MidAmerica Nazarene University.

After nearly a decade, our commitment to being a valuable professional development resource for the community is stronger than ever, and we work towards this everyday by providing exceptional learning for educators across the country.

Why Take a Commonwealth Learning Online Institute Course?

CLOI was established in 2010 when it became obvious that busy teachers needed a more versatile option for getting access to the training courses that we at that time taught on-site. We are a branch of the Stratford Foundation Inc. that was founded in 1986 to help students spanning various ages triumph over their learning difficulties, especially in reading and writing. We partnered with an educational organization that helped us to form our first six core facilitated reading courses.

We released the very first facilitated public course (6 in all) in 2012 after reaching a good deal with Gordon College to offer graduate credit for our clients. Nowadays we are very pleased to also include the likes of MidAmerica Nazarene University and Westfield State University in our list of institutions offering graduate credit.

Our courses are readily accessible on the internet via a tablet, desktop PC, laptop, or any type of mobile device. They are ideal for Maine school principals, superintendents, administrators and curriculum directors and can be taken in groups or individually based on the demands of the district or school. Irrespective of where you’re at in your professional development journey, these internet courses enhance your knowledge and improve your teaching techniques.

More Information On Online Commonwealth Learning Online Institute Courses

We presently deliver reading courses both in facilitated and self-paced formats. Online writing and special education courses are being developed. This training helps teachers of all levels from foundational level right up to the 12th grade. The learning solutions presented in each of the online courses will better prepare your scholars for college and further education.

Your Decision: Facilitated Vs. Self Paced Courses

We offer 2 options for online courses dependant on how much structure and instruction you’re seeking. Our self-paced online courses deliver a lot more freedom because you do them as time allows. It is not necessary to complete a lesson by a specific date before moving on. However, a trained facilitator is available to E-Mail with any questions or concerns. Such study courses are also shorter, usually requiring anywhere between eight and fifteen hours of study to accomplish. Facilitated courses convey more comprehensive instruction and take 7 weeks to do. Contrary to the self-paced courses, you will be required to finish each lesson by a certain date before carrying on. A specialist, instructor directs you through the training and sets objectives which students have to reach before progressing. Such training courses take roughly 50 to 70 hours to complete. Our facilitated courses are available 5 times each year from Jan to Sept.

Course Topics

Among the current online courses are Integrating 5 Main Reading Skills, Close Reading, Instructing Spelling and Phonetics and Vocabulary Building. They’ll explain how you can help students to understand the association between the sound of the words when spoken with actual words on a page, increase fluency, broaden their vocabulary, and much more. Our series of courses were designed by education administrators especially for tutors and teachers. They feature many techniques which you can incorporate in your classroom.

Earn Continuing Education Credits For Your Professional Development

Every facilitated course earns you three graduate credits or 36 PDPs which you can use towards your professional development. Our self-paced formats earn you 1/2 or one grad credit. New courses that are worth two graduate credits are presently in development. Graduate credit is provided by Westfield State University, MidAmerica Nazarene University and Gordon College; you will get credits from the college that you choose. PDP’s are offered from Westfield State University.

Teacher Testimonial

I have found that students who are struggling and reluctant writers are more successful when given the option to use computers. I also am hoping to motivate the students who are stuck in a rut and who have experienced a more traditional approach towards learning vocabulary. I am eager to bring such dynamic tools back to the classroom.
