CLOI’s Journey

In 1986, the Stratford Foundation Inc. was formed with the goal of becoming a valuable educational resource for the community. After establishing the Commonwealth Learning Center in 1988 and the Professional Training Institute in 1992, Stratford came into the 21st century in 2010 when CLOI, the Commonwealth Learning Online Institute, was formed.

Since our early days we have increased our offerings and university partners to meet the needs of educators nationwide. Today our program includes both self-paced and facilitated courses, and our credit offering institutions have expanded to include Gordon College, Westfield State University, and MidAmerica Nazarene University.

After nearly a decade, our commitment to being a valuable professional development resource for the community is stronger than ever, and we work towards this everyday by providing exceptional learning for educators across the country.

Our next step was to partner with universities in an effort to provide graduate credits for our teachers. The first courses (6) were offered in 2012. At this time, the universities offering graduate credits include MidAmerica Nazarene University, Gordon College and Westfield State University.

Our courses are readily available on the web via a laptop, desktop computer, tablet, or any other mobile device. They are suitable for Oyster Bay school superintendents, curriculum directors, administrators and principals and can be used individually or in groups dependant on the needs of the school or district. Regardless of where you stand in your teaching journey, our web based courses broaden your knowledge and teaching techniques.

Our existing course catalog targets reading development; writing and special education courses are under development. The courses are designed to help teachers of all grades from the foundational level right up to the 12th grade. They are designed to help prepare students for college and further education.

Self-Paced Vs. Facilitated Online Courses

Self-paced courses may be done in accordance with your routine. There are no set deadlines for completing each lesson; you can study them when it’s right for you. A professional facilitator is always on hand to answer any questions or issues that may crop up. They will also give you a grading mark should you be taking the course for graduate credit. Self-paced courses require somewhere between 8 and 15 hrs to do and participants earn 1/2 to one credit. They are there to study whenever you want. The facilitated training courses, however, offer a bit more structure. Think of them as extensive workshop training in a chosen topic area over a time frame of seven weeks. A professional, masters-level facilitator leads the course and sets targets and expectations which participants must fulfill weekly. Such training courses should take approximately fifty to seventy hours to finish and earn 3 graduate credits or 36 PDPs. They occur in January, March, May, July, and September.

Our current online reading instruction courses focus on Instructing Spelling and Phonetics, Vocabulary Building, Close Reading and Integrating 5 Main Reading Skills. They’re tailored so that you can expose students to fresh techniques for understanding the link between the sound of the words when spoken with written words on a page, and additionally to develop into swifter readers. All of our online lessons supply numerous teaching examples that you’re able to use in your own classroom lessons.

Earn Continuing Education Credits For Your Professional Development

Every facilitated format course will earn you 36 PDPs or 3 graduate credits that you can use towards your development as a teacher. Our self-paced courses earn you 1/2 or one grad credit. New courses which will be worth two graduate credits are in development. Graduate credit is offered by Westfield State University, MidAmerica Nazarene University and Gordon College; you’ll get grad credit from whichever college you select. PDP’s are only offered by Westfield State University.
