The History of CLOI Essex, Vermont

Commonwealth Learning Online Institute is the newest part of Stratford Foundation Inc., a nonprofit educational institution established in 1986 with the intention of becoming an academic resource for the Essex, Vermont community. The Stratford Foundation then began offering on-site education for students, and classes for teaching professionals so that they could advance their professional development. As soon as the world wide web gave the chance for busy teachers with little time to spare to do training courses at their leisure, CLOI was founded to fill this need for literacy teachers.

We then hunted for university partners to offer graduate credit for our clients. Gordon College was the first one to come on board, and our initial 6 courses went public in 2012. These days our universities offering graduate credits have broadened somewhat to include Westfield State University and MidAmerica Nazarene University.

Our online courses are readily available via a PC, laptop, tablet, or other mobile device. They’re ideal for Essex, Vermont school administrators, principals, superintendents and curriculum directors and can be used individually or in groups dependant on the demands of the district or school. Regardless of where you stand in your development, our courses widen your knowledge and hone your teaching skills.

Your Decision: Facilitated Vs. Self Paced Online Courses

Our self-paced courses can be done according to your routine. There are no set deadlines for doing each lesson; you can do them when it’s right for you. A facilitator is always there to respond to any questions or worries that may come up. They will also give you a grade mark if you’re taking the program for graduate credits. Our facilitated online courses, conversely, give a more organized approach. Think of them as in-depth training in a particular topic area over a 7 week time frame. A trained, facilitator leads the way and sets expectations and targets which participants have to fulfill weekly. Such training courses should take somewhere between 50 and 70 hours to accomplish and will earn you 36 PDPs or three graduate credits. They take place in January, March, May, July, and September.

Teacher Testimonial

This course has helped me, a middle-level educator, raise my awareness toward phonics instruction and assessment. Comprehension has always been high on my radar and I have many books on this. Only a few, even mention phonics as a target for assessment and analysis.
